The story of Rip Van Winkle, published in 1819 by American writer Washington Irving, tells the tale of Rip Van Winkle who lived in the Catskill Mountains. Van Winkle was a
farmer who one day while wandering through the woods was visited by magical dwarves who gave him a drink. After taking a drink Rip Van Winkle fell asleep. He slept for twenty years. When Rip Van Winkle woke up he had a long white beard, his wife was dead, his children grown and the American Revolutionary War was over.
